A man convicted of kidnapping a Hamilton woman, who was later found dead, has been jailed for three years and nine months.

Rae Portman, 33, went missing in June last year and her body was found in a rural suburb of south Auckland in September.

Lee Rigby kidnapped Ms Portman, drove her to Hamilton where she was killed and then helped get rid of the vehicle. He pleaded guilty to the charge in March this year.

In a police statement, Rigby said he was told that if he revealed any information about what he did, he too would be killed.

In sentencing at Manukau District Court on Wednesday, Judge Jonathan Moses said Rigby had provided a great deal of assistance to police which contributed to a significant reduction to his sentence.

The judge said kidnapping carries a maximum of seven years in prison, but because of Rigby's remorse and co-operation, that was reduced to three years and nine months.

A man accused of murdering Rae Portman has pleaded not guilty and is due to go to trial in October this year.
