Queen St package detonated but 'not suspicious'

Police say they no longer think a package found in central Auckland on Wednesday was a bomb.

The black package was found by a member of the public at a bus stop outside the Q Theatre in Queen Street about 1pm.

The road between Mayoral Drive and Wakefield Street was closed while a Defence Force robot examined the package which a Radio New Zealand reporter at the scene said looked like a small box the size of a handbag.

Part of the package was blown up in a controlled detonation. Inspector Willie Taylor said the remaining parts have been taken away for inspection but are longer regarded as suspicious.
