Police in the American state of Nebraska have confirmed a tramper who went missing in Kahurangi National Park is a registered sex offender in the US, but say he is not wanted by state or federal police.
American Guy Verschuur and two women were found by search teams on Monday, a week after they were due to return from a three-day tramp.
Immigration New Zealand is reviewing his file.
The 51-year-old arrived in New Zealand in December 2002 and is now a resident.
Police have been talking to Mr Verschuur and the women about being missing in the national park at the top of the South Island, but say they have no other interest in him.
