The Ministry for Primary Industries is investigating illegal smuggling of wildlife after seizing a live scorpion in Queenstown.
The ministry says investigators discovered the scorpion during an operation on 19 April.
It says it can't give any further information as the inquiry is continuing.
However, the ministry says the scorpion was not seized by biosecurity officials at Queenstown Airport.
