A child protection group says New Zealand's paedophile monitoring is working, though overseas authorities played a key role in catching a New Zealand man who was part of an international child pornography ring.

Bradford Pascoe's offending was uncovered after an Italian investigation linked him to a child pornography network.

The 38-year-old was sentenced to preventive detention at the High Court in Hamilton on Friday on 70 charges including sexual violation, indecent assault and distributing objectionable material.

Pascoe knew all three of his victims, who were aged between two and six years old.

He must serve at least eight years before he is eligible for parole.

The chair of ECPACT Child Alert, Yvonne Dufaur, says New Zealand's monitoring is successful and is boosted by international investigations.

"There is a lot more tracking of this sort of thing, but the fact that we work internationally to identify people is leading to more catching of people who are invovled in this sort of thing."
