Canadian tramper's locator beacon wasn't working

A Canadian tramper who had been reported missing in the Mackenzie District has been found.

The 26-year-old man had been walking the Te Araroa trail across New Zealand and had been using a locator beacon so his family could track his whereabouts.

His family rang New Zealand police on Sunday saying they had not heard from him in a few days.

A search began on Monday in the area between Lake Tekapo and the Rangitata River.

Mid-South Canterbury area commander Dave Gaskin said the tramper thought the locator beacon was working, but no signal had been received from it since last Thursday and he was not aware of the search.

Mr Gaskin said the man was found in the Royal Hut by Lake Tekapo and is continuing his walk.
