Spike in burglaries during school holidays

Waikato police say there has been a spike in residential burglaries during the school holidays, with some of the crime being committed by teenagers.

Senior Sergeant Freda Grace says 99 burglaries were reported in the region between Anzac Day and Monday morning alone.

She says a 13-year-old boy was caught after breaking into two homes and leaving his cellphone behind, while another 13-year-old stole beer from a garage.

Ms Grace says householders need to do more to protect themselves, because many of those who were burgled had left windows and doors unlocked.
