Catholic parishes asked to consider mergers

9:31 am on 4 May 2013

Catholics in the Wellington diocese are being asked to consider merging some parishes.

The diocese covers lower the North Island from Levin and Masterton south and the top of the South Island.

The church is holding a hui in Porirua on Sunday and another in the South Island next weekend to discuss issues such as it having fewer clergy, less money and earthquake-prone buildings that need repair.

Archbishop John Dew says some of 47 parishes in the Wellington diocese are quite small and he would like each one to consider how they can best serve the needs of the church and the parish in the future. He is asking for feedback by the end of August.
