Flashing signs trialled on rural roads

Flashing road signs aimed at reducing crashes at rural intersections are being trialled.

On Monday, a sign is being switched on at the intersection of Buchanans Road and State Highway 73 in Canterbury, where there have been 19 crashes in the past 10 years, including one fatality.

Cars approaching the intersection will trigger the flashing sign that prompts drivers to reduce their speed.

Canterbury West Coast regional state highway manager Colin Knaggs says another is being trialled in the North Island and both will be evaluated after two months.

If successful, signs will be placed at rural intersections throughout the country.
