UN to review NZ human rights record

7:31 pm on 4 May 2009

The Government is preparing for a comprehensive review of New Zealand's record on human rights by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Justice Minister Simon Power is heading a large team of officials who will attend the hearing in Switzerland on Thursday. A verdict is expected next Monday.

The UN council is checking the human rights of every country, including those rarely criticised.

Human rights authorities in this country expect New Zealand to get good marks from the UN assessment, but say it will still be faulted on domestic violence, asylum seekers and the Foreshore and Seabed Act.

In contrast, the Government thinks the UN will recognise progress made in these areas, and the high level of personal rights New Zealand already has.

These include the country's ban on capital punishment, decriminalisation of homosexuality, and prohibition of gender or racial discrimination.
