Maori King's new flag unveiled

6:52 am on 5 May 2009

A new flag celebrating the reign of King Tuheitia was unveiled at Turangawaewae at the weekend.

Waatea News reports the flag incorporates Te Paki o Matariki, the coat of arms of the King movement originally designed in the 1860's by tohunga Tiwai Paraone of Hauraki and Te Aokatoa of Waikato and Ngati Raukawa.

The centre piece of Te Paki o Matariki is a taniwha.

The flag will replace the one that flew for Te Arikinui Te Atairangikahu.
