8:38 am on 6 May 2009

New car sales collapsed in April, falling 36% to 3525, compared with the same month last year.

The Motor Industry Association says that's the lowest level of April sales for 35 years.

Sales of new commercial vehicles fared slightly better, down 33%compared with last year.

Association chief executive Perry Kerr says some car dealerships are already closing and he expects more will be forced to shut their doors, particularly in rural areas.
