9:38 pm on 12 May 2013

Two people were killed and six injured in a four-car crash in Northland on Sunday.

Police say the crash happened on State Highway One north of Whangarei just after 2pm.

Four people were taken to hospital, one of them by helicopter, while the others were treated at the scene.

A Whangarei Hospital spokesperson says two people have now been discharged, one is still being treated for a fracture and another will stay overnight for observation.

Northland rescue helicopter pilot Russell Procter says the crash happened on a straight section of road in dry conditions and it's not obvious what caused it.
