Hone Heke's remains to be reburied - Rankin

8:48 pm on 13 May 2013

A descendant of the Ngapuhi chief Hone Heke says the warrior's bones will be reburied on sacred ground in Northland in June.

David Rankin says the iwi has agreed to bury Hone Heke's remains in a traditional burial ground on Maori land near Kaikohe.

Mr Rankin upset other Ngapuhi members when he removed the chief's bones from a cave in 2011.

He says he removed them because the site was at risk of development.

Mr Rankin says the new burial spot will be permanent and protected from any disturbance.
