Parole rejected for woman who stabbed friend

A woman who stabbed a friend about 50 times before dumping her body down a bank in Otaki will remain in prison.

The Parole Board has rejected an application for release by Melissa Anne Wepa, who is serving at sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of Caroline Gardiner in November 1997.

Wepa killed Ms Gardiner for dobbing her into the police about a burglary.

She was released from prison in 2012 and was working as a painter, but recalled in December after breaching parole conditions.

The Parole Board says Wepa has been trying to secure new accommodation and employment, but it rejected her release so she can reduce her security classification to minimum.

The board will assess the case again in November.
