Biosecurity staff at Auckland airport had a surprise case of live crabs coming into New Zealand.
Five big crabs were found in the luggage of a passenger arriving from Sydney.
The Ministry for Primary Industries says they were quite large and gave staff a bit of a fright. One of the crabs crushed a pen when it was being photographed.
The ministry says it gets a lot of fish and crustaceans coming through, but live crabs are very unusual.
The passenger had declared the crabs, so he escaped a fine, although he faced a fine of $20 for choosing to have staff euthanise them and then store the crustaceans for collection on his way out of the country.
