100km pursuit by police

12:05 pm on 18 May 2013

Police followed a car travelling on its wheel rims for almost 100km along State Highway One on Saturday morning.

They say the car failed to stop at an alcohol checkpoint in Whangarei at about 2.20am, but was not apprehended until Warkworth.

All of the car's tyres were deflated when it drove over road spikes just out of Whangarei. But it kept going until it was forced off the road.

Police said the car never exceeded the speed limit during the chase but officers took action after the driving became erratic.

A man is under arrest. Police said unresolved family matters may have led to his behaviour.
