Supreme Court judge Robert Chambers has been knighted posthumously.
Sir Robert had been a judge at New Zealand's highest court since 2011 and died at his Wellington home in his sleep on Monday.
Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae said Sir Robert was to have been knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours, to be announced in June.
However, Sir Jerry said given the special circumstances, the knighthood has now taken effect.
