Shoppers and staff were evacuated from Harvey Norman on Parumoana Street after a fire started in the back of the building just before midday and spread to the ceiling cavity.

Fire Service assistant area manager Matthew Abel says the cause is still being investigated.

A Harvey Norman staff member says the fire broke out where televisions and computers were stored, and a company car used by technicians was burned out.

Everyone was evacuated and there are no reports of injuries.
