Call for action to reduce Pacific smoking

7:13 am on 10 June 2013

Tala Pasifika, the national smokefree agency, is calling for a massive effort to reduce smoking among Pacific people.

One in four Pacific adults smokes and that has not gone down significantly since 2006.

Tala Pasifika said Pacific communities won't meet the national smokefree target in 20-25 if that trend continues.

Programme manager Stephanie Erick said the Ministry of Health needs to shift its focus from individual smokers to getting whole families and churches to quit.

Pacific health director Hilda Fa'asalele says an extra $20 million will be spent by the the ministry over the next four years to reduce smoking among Pacific people, Maori, youth and pregnant women.
