Book shop sales down

Growing demand for cheap books from overseas websites is putting jobs within the industry in New Zealand at risk.

A recent online retail report by Nielsen shows almost $3.7 billion was spent in online purchases last year with books and magazines the third-most popular product. Of this, 26% was spent on overseas websites.

Booksellers New Zealand said book shop sales have declined by up to 19% year-on-year.

Chief executive Lincoln Gould said overseas sites like Amazon make for tough competition.

Mr Gould said Harper Collins has discussed moving operations back to Australia, and Pearson Educational is to shift back to Australia.
