Serial fraudster denied parole

Serial fraudster Wayne Thomas Patterson has been denied parole after being suspected of providing false references to the Parole Board.

Patterson was jailed in 2007 for using more than 100 identities to defraud the Ministry of Social Development of $3.4 million.

Judge Russell Callander says the Parole Board had received a letter from a Paul Reynolds at the Carterton District Council confirming that Patterson may be employed in its horticulture department.

The judge says the board later learnt the council had no horticulture department, no employee named Paul Reynolds and was unaware of the letter.

Mr Callander says given Patterson's history of dishonesty, his case has been referred to the Parole Board chair to determine whether a complaint should be laid with police.

Until the matter is resolved Patterson remains an undue risk to the community, he says.
