A former head of communications at the Bank of New Zealand has been appointed to take over as the Retirement Commissioner.

Diane Maxwell has been the interim commissioner since March this year, but will assume the full-time role from July for a term of three years.

Ms Maxwell is a former senior manager at the Financial Markets Authority, a media director at the global advertising firm Saatchi and Saatchi and head of brand and corporate affairs at the BNZ.

Commerce Minister Craig Foss said on Thursday Ms Maxwell is well suited to the role because she has a strong focus on financial literacy, has good connections and has proved to be an energising person in the temporary role.
