Gisborne Port says the crew of the New Giant, a South Korean logging ship, is in reasonably good spirts despite the vessel being impounded in Poverty Bay.

The owners of the New Giant, STX, are in receivership and the receiver obtained a High Court order on Friday to seize the ship, which has 20 crew on board.

Gisborne Port manager Andrew Gaddum says the port is in regular radio contact with the crew, who are unable to come ashore.

he said they have been offered provisions, but at this stage have declined the offer.

Mr Gaddum said he ship will have to stay where it is until the issues are resolved in the High Court.

He said the last time a ship was arrested near Gisborne was 1988.
