Advance voting for Mt Albert by-election

10:47 pm on 26 May 2009

Advance voting for the Mt Albert by-election begins in New Zealand on Wednesday.

The by-election is being held on 13 June to replace the seat vacated by former Labour prime minister Helen Clark, who has taken up a position with the United Nations.

Fifteen candidates will contest the by-election. The Mt Albert electorate has been held by the Labour Party since its formation in 1946.

Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden says advance voting will be available until 12 June at five advance voting places in Mt Albert, at Registrars of Electors' offices throughout New Zealand, or at the Chief Electoral Office in Wellington.

Mr Peden says advance voting is particularly important in a by-election because unlike a general election, there will be no polling places open outside the electorate on election day.

Overseas voters

Voters enrolled in the Mt Albert electorate who are overseas can vote from Tuesday by downloading voting papers from the Election New Zealand website.

People overseas can also apply to have voting papers posted to them or can vote in person at posts in Australia, England, China, India, Cook Islands and Samoa.
