Afghan community leader pessimistic about troop withdrawal

An Afghan community leader in New Zealand says he is worried the Afghan military is not up to the task of maintaining security there.

Military operations are now under the control of Afghan forces.

All Hazara Afghan Association acting president Amin Bakhsh said responsibility had to be handed back sooner or later, but Afghan forces will need ongoing help.

Mr Bakhsh said the military does not have the equipment or training to cope in many parts of Afghanistan.

However, Asadullah Rezaie, a former interpreter for New Zealand troops in Bamyam province, said the Afghan forces in that part of the country are well-prepared.
