A burst water main in central Christchurch has closed part of a busy street in the city.
St Asaph St has been closed between Madras and Manchester streets on Friday morning.
The Christchurch City Council's transport and greenspace unit manager, John Mackie, says council contractors are on site and repairing the water main, which could take five hours.
Mr Mackie says the street has been closed in the interest of health and safety.
It's hoped to open at least one lane as soon as it is safe to do so.
