A New Zealand boy has missed out on the semi finals of the World's largest Spelling Bee in Washington.

Christopher Jury, 13, correctly spelt the word prevalent but got stuck with marcescent, an adjective used to describe part of a plant that is withering but not falling.

He says the competition for semi final places was extremely tough with only 41 of 293 spellers making it through.

He prepared for the semi finals by pouring over an American English dictionary containing 475,000 words.
