A jury has found Michael Shane Lihou guilty of raping and abducting a teenager in the Wairarapa town of Carterton last year.

The 44-year-old has been on trial at the High Court in Wellington on eight charges of abduction, assault, rape and threatening to kill.

A jury on Monday found him guilty of all but the charge of threatening to kill.

Lihou said he had consensual sex with the young woman once.

He has previous convictions from the 80s and 90s for rape and abduction and will be sentenced on 9 August.

A friend of Lihou's said another term in prison is not going to help him, but it will be a safer place for him than the outside.

Peter says Lihou has had a tough life and he will continue trying to help him to rehabilitate.

"The way he's been treated through a lot of his childhood, I wouldn't treat my dog that way. But that is no excuse - he is a human being and has to be accountable for his actions. And we've got a judicial system we can be proud of for the protection of all of us."
