Extradition decision appealed

A former Catholic brother who is facing 252 charges of sexual abuse in an Australian court is appealing his extradition to Australia.

Australian Federal Police applied to extradite Bernard Kevin McGrath, 66, in October last year.

The order was granted by Judge Jane Farish in Christchurch District Court on 11 June and Mr Mcgrath was given 15 days to appeal.

Lawyer Phillip Allan has now confirmed Mr McGrath has done so.

The charges include raping, molesting and abusing dozens of boys in New South Whales in the 1970s and 1980s.

Heavy reporting restrictions apply to the case. The judge said the restrictions are to ensure the integrity of the proceedings.
