Three men have arrived safely back on land after their boat overturned off the coast of Waikato.

They were on a fishing trip when they got into difficulty just before 6pm on Saturday, about 10 nautical miles from Kawhia Harbour.

They set off an emergency beacon, sparking a search by the Coastguard and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Two men were found clinging to the hull of their boat, and the third was in the water nearby.

Coastguard president Wally Hawken says none of the men appear to be seriously ill and they are being checked over by ambulance staff.
