Air traffic control charges to rise

4:25 pm on 3 June 2009

Airlines say passengers will end up footing the bill following an increase in air traffic control costs.

The Board of Airline Representatives says the Airways Corporation is increasing charges by more than 4%, affecting all domestic and international flights.

The board's executive director, John Beckett, says the cost increase will inevitably be passed on.

Mr Beckett says the Corporation has not put up its fees for more than a decade and the charges are comparable with services provided in similar countries.

The increase will take effect from July.
