A one-year-old Auckland boy has tested postive for swine flu, taking the total of confirmed cases in New Zealand to 13.

More than 40 staff and children from the Tama Ale Eleele A'oga Amata child care centre in South Auckland, which the boy attends, are being isolated and treated with the drug Tamiflu.

Officials are contacting the 37 families who have children at the centre.

Health authorities say it appears the boy became ill after its family returned from Melbourne on 26 May.

Auckland Regional Public Health clincial director Julia Peters says the boy may have contracted the virus overseas. She says the situation is difficult, but staff will working hard to contain the virus outbreak.

Meanwhile, the first case in Canterbury has also been confirmed.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Alistair Humphrey says the man was a passenger on Air New Zealand Flight NZ 5, which arrived in Auckland from Los Angeles on 31 May.

Dr Humphrey says the 50-year-old showed no flu symptoms until well after he arrived back in New Zealand and poses no threat to other passengers on the flight.

The man is quarantined at home with his family and has been given Tamiflu. Dr Humphrey says he is suffering "unpleasant" flu symptoms, but is not seriously unwell.

New Zealand also has 11 probable cases of swine flu and 66 people in quarantine in total.
