Landfill prices to rise

10:26 am on 23 June 2009

Landfill prices are to rise from 1 July, when a new levy comes into force.

The levy is part of the Waste Minimisation Act, which aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The levy of $10 per tonne will be used by councils and community groups for waste minimisation projects.

But the levy will mean price rises for council rubbish bags, dumping waste at landfills and collection services.

In Wellington, landfill fees are rising by 13%. Some collection services have increased by more than 20%.

City operations manager Mike Mendonca says the levy is intended to act as an incentive for consumers to reduce waste.

Local Government New Zealand says everyone will be affected by the new levy.
