6:35 pm on 23 June 2009

Police investigating an attack on rugby player Mathieu Bastareaud want to speak with two women seen entering a hotel with men who appeared to be members of the French team.

Officers are investigating an alleged assault on Bastareaud by at least two men in Wellington early on Sunday, following the Test against the All Blacks.

Inspector Peter Cowan says the focus is on establishing the movement and timings of Bastareaud, 20, and other French players about this time.

Inquiries have been carried out at a number of central city bars and CCTV footage has been recovered from various locations.

Mr Cowan says police want to speak to two women seen on security camera footage entering the Holiday Inn in Featherston Street just before 5.30am on Sunday with three men.

Mr Cowan woud not say if Bastareaud was one of the men.

Police also wish to talk to the taxi driver that dropped the party off at the central city hotel.
