A report by the Hudson recruitment company has found hiring expectations have improved for the first time in two years with some employers saying they're looking to increase permanent staff levels.

The Hudson says the number of companies wanting to increase staff rose from 12% to 16% in the June quarter.

Employers wanting to keep numbers steady increased by 5%, while those still planing to reduce numbers decreased to 15%.

Executive general manger Marc Burrage says the figures show "pockets of promise".
