Waitakere wants Maori seats for all councils

1:54 pm on 25 June 2009

Waitakere City Council wants the Government to create seats for Maori on all local bodies.

The council will make the suggestion as part of a submission to a Parliamentary select committee hearing views on the creation of a super-city council to govern Auckland.

The council was previously divided on whether Maori should have reserved seats on the new council.

However, councillors decided on Wednesday night not only to call for an unspecified number of Maori seats on the Auckland Council, but to begin a campaign for a similar change nationwide.

Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says the Treaty of Waitangi requires local government to look at shared governance.

Mayor Bob Harvey says the council will promote the idea to the Government and other councils through Local Government New Zealand.
