High interest in home insulation subsidy

Thousands of people have expressed interest in having their homes insulated through a new Government subsidy that begins on 1 July.

The Government has set aside $320 million to insulate an estimated 180,000 houses over the next four years.

One of the companies offering the Government subsidised insulation is Energy Smart, which says it has been receiving about 450 calls per week since the scheme was announced in the Budget.

Chief executive Joan Smith says the company is surprised by the level of interest.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority says 112,000 people have visited its website for information about the scheme and its call centre has received 10,500 calls.

Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee visited one of the first houses to be insulated under the new programme in Lower Hutt on Wednesday morning.

He said the home owner received a grant to cover part of the cost of installing underfloor insulation and a heat pump.

Because of the subsidy, the company doing the job, Right House, has taken on 20 new employees to meet increased demand for home insulation.
