Family of Jakarta bomb victim grateful for support

The family of a New Zealand man killed in suicide bomb attacks in Indonesia last week say he was a compassionate and caring person.

Tim Mackay was one of nine people to die in bomb blasts at the Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Jakarta last Friday. At least 53 were also injured in the attacks.

Officials suspect the explosions were the work of the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah, which was also behind the Bali bombings in 2002.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Mackay's family thanked the New Zealand public for its wonderful support and kind messages.

His family says Mr Mackay was a quiet man with a mischievous sense of humour, but one who did not suffer fools lightly.

Mr Mackay was the president director of cement company Holcim Indonesia.

His family also thanked his colleagues and other friends who helped bring his body home, ahead of his funeral in Wellington on Thursday.
