Heavy rain causing problems for travellers

3:14 pm on 24 July 2009

Continuing heavy rain is causing disruption to travellers on Friday.

Flood waters from the Ruamahanga river are making driving hazardous in Martinborough in Wairarapa, with State Highway 53 between Martinborough to Featherston closed.

The river was expected to have peaked at five metres by 9.30am.

Grays Road in Pauatahanui, north of Wellington, has reopened following flooding and Hayward's Hill Road on State Highway 58 has been reopened after a fatal crash.

Localised flooding has closed SH43 between Tahora to Taumarunui in the central North Island due to fallen trees in the Tangarakau Gorge.

In the South Island, the Milford Highway on SH94 remains closed due to a risk of avalanche.
