Raurimu gunman released from psychiatric care

9:54 pm on 26 July 2009

A man responsible for a massacre at Raurimu 12 years ago has been released from secure psychiatric care.

Stephen Anderson, 37, shot dead six people and wounded four others in 1997 at his parent's Raurimu lodge, in the central North Island.

Mr Anderson, a paranoid schizophrenic, has spent the past 12 years at a secure psychiatric facility in Porirua after being found not guilty by reason of insanity of six murders and four attempted murders.

Mental Health director Dr David Chaplow confirmed on Sunday that Mr Anderson now lives at an Upper Hutt address on limited release.

Dr Chaplow said Mr Anderson poses no danger to the public. He said the release is subject to a number of strict conditions.

The release has angered Isabel McCarty, who was shot in the back and lost her husband that day. She says it makes her question what six people's lives are worth.
