Five companies have either signed up to or been offered contracts to take part in the Government's biodiesel grants scheme.

Under the scheme, which started at the beginning of this month, a grant of up to 42.5 cents per litre is available to biodiesel producers.

Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee says the companies chosen are using a range of sustainable feedstocks to produce biodiesel, such as tallow, used cooking oil and rapeseed.

The companies involved are Biodiesel Oil in Tamaki, Ecodiesel in Onehunga, New Zealand Ester Fuels in South Auckland, Environ Fuels in Te Kuiti and Biodiesel New Zealand in Christchurch.
