Fisheries groups fear deregulation

10:34 am on 8 August 2009

An alliance of environmental and recreational fishing groups is worried a review of the future of fisheries is moving towards deregulation.

The seven groups have met Fisheries Minister, Phil Heatley, to voice their concerns over the upcoming strategy, Fisheries 2030.

Recreational Fishing Council president Geoff Rowling says the present Government appears to dislike regulations, but without them there would be no fisheries left.

A spokesperson for Mr Heatley says the strategy is a work in progress, and the groups' concerns are being considered.
