Public sector digital record storage being improved

The Government is launching a plan to improve the storage of digital records across the public sector.

The Digital Community Action Plan, being led by Archives New Zealand, aims to improve the way government departments are storing and sharing information.

The Minister Responsible for Archives New Zealand, Nathan Guy, says two thirds of public sector agencies can no longer access some of their records because they're stored on old hardware or unreadable software.

He says with technology continuing to advance quickly, the way information is stored is also changing and the plan aims to make digital information from the public sector more accessible to the public.
