Forestry figure Peter McKelvey dies

A respected figure within New Zealand's forestry sector, Professor Peter McKelvey, has died at the age of 82.

Professor McKelvey began as a Forest Service trainee in 1945 before completing a science degree at Canterbury University and a forestry degree at the University of Edinburgh.

He furthered his career in the 1950s and 60s at the Forest Research Institute before taking the position of Wellington Conservator of Forests in 1966.

A year later, he became the foundation Professor of Forestry at Canterbury University, a role he filled until 1985, the same year he was awarded an OBE.
