Sentencing discounts suggested for sex case guilty pleas

The Crown has suggested that greater sentencing discounts be given to offenders who enter early guilty pleas in sexual offending cases.

The matter is being discussed in front of a full five judge bench of the Court of Appeal.

The case involves a man who admitted having sexual connection with two girls under 16.

The man's lawyer has suggested there was a disparity between the sentence given to his client and that imposed on the man's girlfriend, who was also involved in the offending but pleaded guilty at an earlier stage.

The Crown lawyer said it may be appropriate for a separate sentencing category to be created for offenders who enter early guilty pleas in sex cases.

He said such pleas are more valuable because the stress and strain on victims in sex cases is a lot greater than that experienced by victims of other crimes.
