A 57-year-old man has died following a violent confrontation near the Northland town of Kaikohe two weeks ago.
Police say the man was critically injured when he and another man, aged 61, confronted the occupant of a rural address with an iron bar and a tomahawk.
Police say a fight took place and the occupant, aged 46, managed to overpower the men.
The 57-year-old was flown to Auckland Hospital and died on Saturday as a result of his injuries.
Police spokesperson Sarah Kennett says the 61-year-old has appeared in Kaikohe District Court on Monday charged with aggravated burglary.
He was remanded in custody until Tuesday. Police say further charges may be laid.
