Banned athlete won't be representing NZ at Olympics

Banned marathon runner Liza Hunter-Galvan will not be eligible for selection for New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Sports Tribunal last week found Hunter-Galvan guilty of taking the blood-boosting substance EPO and suspended her until May 2011.

The ban means the American-based athlete cannot compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee says under its anti-doping policy she is also ineligible for selection for the next Olympic Games after the tribunal's suspension expires.

The committee says it remains confident that New Zealand athletes are proud to compete cleanly on the world's stage and this violation is a very regrettable but isolated incident.
