Two Australian tourists have been robbed at knifepoint by a teenager in the Bay of Plenty town of Te Puke.

Police say the two men had only arrived from Melbourne on Wednesday and were planning a short stay in Tauranga.

They were followed to their Ford Falcon rental car on Thursday after stopping to buy lunch at a bakery.

The pair handed over cash after being threatened by the offender, who is described as a solidly-built Maori male, aged about 16.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
