Life jacket bylaw submissions about to close

6:16 am on 13 August 2010

Submissions close on Friday on a plan by Canterbury Regional Council to introduce a bylaw to make life jackets compulsory in boats under six metres.

All 60 submissions received so far are supportive of the move.

Canterbury is following three other councils in making the change before the national maritime legislation is altered.

Maritime New Zealand hopes the Transport Act will be amended by October, and other regional councils will then have to introduce bylaws to reflect the change.
